Drake: Dealing With Haters, Ditching VIBE, and Sippin’ Syrup

Friday, March 30th, 2012

While Drake toured in UK, Drake sat down with the Guardian for an exclusive interview where he talked about being an “Icon”, recreational drug use, his critics and handling botched interviews. Check out the excerpts below.

Ditching the VIBE Interview

“I didn’t like the way I was treated,” he says. “They ran this story about how I’m the most bitter guy, and my life is in turmoil. And I’m, like, a very happy 25-year-old kid living an amazing life. They tried to put a damper on my character, I guess because I didn’t play according to their rules.”

About being rap Jimi Hendrix or Bob Marley on the song “Lord Knows.”

“I didn’t really say I was the rap Hendrix or Marley, I said I was the descendant,” he corrects, smiling at the tenuous distinction. “Because I feel like that’s what I want to be for this generation: iconic. That’s the purpose I want to serve on this earth. I want my words to be remembered in 10, 15 years.”

The critics and the haters.

“I can’t lie to you, I read what they have to say and it’s … character-building.” He used to find it mortally wounding. “There have been times when a negative comment about me would be the be all and end all, and I’d wonder, Why do you hate me so much? Why would you tell me that you want to kill my mom or see me dead? “It’s scary for me to say this on record,” he says, “but artists are only human, and we seek validation like everyone else. You just have to come to the conclusion that it’s OK, there are going to be people who like you and people who don’t. Luckily there are millions of people who love me and a few who don’t.”

“Have I sipped codeine before?” he asks for me. “Yeah, of course. Have I smoked weed? Yes. Do I drink wine? Yes. But do I do it excessively? No. I’m not a reckless guy. I do it all within moderation. I’m not into drugs.” He realizes what he has just said, and bursts out laughing, as do his crew. “I mean any outside the ones I just mentioned. Nah, that’s not me. I care too much about what I have. I’m not going to throw it away for that.”

Drake Discusses 3rd Album While in London

Thursday, March 29th, 2012

While in London for his Club Paradise tour, Drizzy Drake sat down with KISS FM for an interview. Drake discusses his third album, which he says he would like Jamie XX, who produced "Take Care," to have a big part in. He also talks on his crowd becoming world wide, chilling with Rihanna and more.

"I’m just sort of at that place where I’m collecting beats. I recently did some work with 2 Chainz, he’s an incredible artist from the U.S. that’s buzzing right now," Drizzy said. "But aside from that, I’m just collecting beats. I’m actually supposed to go see Jamie xx tonight so we can take it a step further. I really want him to have a big presence on this next album. 40 is back home working on an incredible project. I can’t wait to get back there and work with him. So yeah, it’s really more about building a canvas and we’ll start right."

He also talks about guys relating to him and why that is,

"Well, I think that, you know, one of the best parts about my career, is like, you know, I don’t have to wake up in the morning and say to myself I gotta remember to talk like this or act like this ’cause I’m playing a character," Drake continued, "I get to wake up and be myself."

Drake: “I Want To Make An Album With Rihanna”

Thursday, March 29th, 2012

According to MTV UK, Drake has said that he would love to write and record an entire album of fresh material with Rihanna.

The rapper, who had a brief fling with RiRi back in 2009 and afterwards revealed that she “broke his heart” was enthusiastic when asked about the prospect of working with her again.

He told Capital FM: “Yeah, I mean anytime she wants to work I’m there, you know. I’ve always urged her to let me come and really work on an album for her, with her. I feel like I could do some great writing for her.

Actually, the Rita Ora song that’s out right now was originally for Rihanna.

I’ve got some great ideas so, you know, hopefully when the time is right she’ll send me that text or call me up and say, ‘Hey let’s get in the studio for a month and make an album’, and we can do it.

Would a Drizzy Drake and Rihanna collaboration be an album you would buy?

Drake Covering GQ April 2012 Issue

Wednesday, March 14th, 2012

  • Drake will be covering GQ’s April issue. Drizzy will be alongside John Slattery and Dave Franco in the new issue. This GQ issue will have it’s main focus on “Style Bible”, which will give men advice on how to look their best.

“There’s just a time where it was like, just getting pu**y. Where I was in that sort of ‘I’m young, I’m going to disconnect from my emotions and just do what everyone else tells me I should do and just be a rapper and have my fun.’ And for me as a person, it just doesn’t work. I just need something else. The seconds after a man reaches climax, that’s like the realest moment of your life. If I don’t want you next to me in that fifteen, twenty seconds, then there’s something wrong.” – Drake, on growing out of his promiscuous phase.
